Kit insurance

Q1 - If I were in danger and had to offload equipment in order to save myself would this equipment be covered?

A - Yes. The Underwriter will pay up to the sum insured in the event of Emergency Jettison of Equipment whilst in use.

Q2 - I live in Australia. Are you able to insure my dive equipment?

A - We cannot insure your dive kit unless you are a UK citizen and have lived in the UK not longer than 6 months ago and/or live in the UK for at least 6 months of the year.

Q3 - I have taken out my Scubasure policy but don’t know how to view my policy documents?

A - In order to download your policy you need to copy and paste the link into your browser that can be found at the bottom of the confirmation e-mail you were sent.

Q4 - If I am in the water and someone on the boat is handing me an underwater camera would the camera be covered if, during handover, the boat lurched and the camera fell into the sea and was irretrievable?

A - Yes, the camera would be covered.

Q5 - There is a section in the Scubasure key facts that states that ‘Any wristwatch must be worn on the wrist with a covering watchstrap to retain the watch in the event that the strap or strap pins break or fail during Scuba Diving.’ Does this mean a second strap must be worn over the watch?

A - The intention of this section of the wording is to have a second strap attached to the watch and the divers wrist, like a safety strap incase the regular watch strap broke.

Q6 - The key facts state that kit is covered whilst in transit as long as it is out of sight in a securely locked car. I have a People Carrier with an open boot but I pack my equipment in opaque boxes. Is this sufficient in order to be classed as out of sight?

A - Yes, this is acceptable, as long as the equipment is not visible from the outside. As a security measure in this situation we always recommend that any window stickers relating to sport diving memebership etc are removed as this could identify the vehicle as a target for theft given that the boxes are visible even though the contents are not.

Q7 - I am currently working in Malaysia, but for tax purposes am ordinarily resident in the UK where my family live and where I keep my house. I need insurance for my dive gear while based in Malaysia and would like to know if you are able to offer me cover.

A - We can offer cover as you are a UK resident – i.e. you pay tax in the UK and your home/residence is in the UK. If you were living in Malaysia it would be different but as you are living in the UK but simply working in Malaysia we can offer cover.

Q8 - I am trying to take out Scubasure kit insurance online and am being asked for my serial numbers, I don’t have all of these is this a problem?

A - Not a problem, just add any that you do have or any other identifying mark that is individual to the piece of equipment.

Q9 - I have ordered some dive equipment, could you tell me whether it is covered whilst in transit from the seller to myself?

A - The equipment would not be covered during shipping – this would be covered by any insurance you have taken out on the delivery or by the company from which you are buying. Our key facts state that ‘Cover is only provided during Scuba Diving, whilst in transit, whilst out of sight in a locked vehicle, or when kept in a locked place of storage’. Items are only covered by your insurance once they are in your possession.

Q10 - Is my camera covered if it floods whilst diving?

A - Accidental flooding is covered if your kit is properly maintained – e.g. equipment is correctly put together, in a suitable underwater container (where applicable), o-rings are properly maintained etc. As long as this is adhered to you would be covered in the event of accidental flooding.

Q11 - There is a time limit specified in the key facts for getting flooded equipment to a qualified repair shop, if I was on a Liveaboard (i.e. in the middle of the ocean) and could not get to a repair shop within the specified time, is this rule flexible?

A - As long as you contact the insurer as soon as the incident occurs they would be able to take the circumstances into account and advise what to do next.

Q12 - I am buying my both my kit insurance and my travel insurance through Scubasure. Am I right I thinking I am entitled to some sort of discount?

A - To get 20% discount when buying both Diving and kit insurance the ‘exclude baggage’ section must be ticked. This means that your baggage (in this case anything other than your dive kit) will not be covered under the policy so it is recommended you have your personal belongings covered under your household insurance.

Q13 - Does the kit insurance cover for airplane travel - i.e. lost luggage?

A - You are covered for loss of dive equipment whilst in transit. However, you would not be covered for standard luggage (e.g. items not dive related) with kit insurance alone - this would need to be done through your travel insurance or household insurance. Scubasure travel insurance covers up to £750 worth of luggage per person insured.

Q14 - Will it cover my gear if I am working as Instructor?

A - You are indeed covered for non-recreational diving such as working as an instructor.

Q15 - Do you provide insurance for overseas dive centres?

A - Overseas dive centres are not currently covered by Scubasure however please go to www.ad-pro.org and sign up with ad-pro.org. We are looking to set up a global facility for insurance and hope to launch this facility through membership of ad-pro later this year.

Q16 - Is the cover ‘new for old’?

A - Yes, any lost or irreparable items will be replaced (subject to terms and conditions of your insurance) to the value of the current model on the market. If that make or model is no longer available the underwriter will identify the closest possible match.

Travel insurance

Q1 - When buying dive insurance is the Red Sea classed as Europe or World Wide?

A - For dive insurance purpose the Red Sea is classed as Europe.

Q2 - What depth am I insured to dive to under the Scubasure policy?

A - You are insured to dive to your current qualified depth (whatever that may be) or a greater depth if accompanied by an instructor for the purpose of extending your qualification.

Q3 - Under section 1A (Cancellation) – am I insured if I cancel a diving holiday because I am unfit to dive, even if I am fit to travel?

A - If you are still fit to travel you would not be eligible to submit a claim under the cancellation section of the policy should you choose to cancel a trip. Although you are unable to drive you are still fit to take the trip.

Q4 - I have taken out my policy but don’t know how to view my policy documents?

A - In order to download your policy you need to copy and paste the link into your browser that can be found at the bottom of the confirmation e-mail you were sent.

Q5 - My county of residence is UK however I have been in Thailand for the past year training to be a Diving Instructor. I will be travelling to Australia and then maybe to Pacific Islands for work. My trip could be up to 90 days. Can you insure?

A - Yes, you need to take out a 31 day policy, plus the relative number of extra weeks. All trips that you take must start and finish at your home address in the UK.

Q6 - I have a multitrip policy and am taking a trip that will be 40 days long. I notice the max trip length on my policy is 31 days. What are my options?

A - The single trip length of 31 days can be extended to a maximum of 45 days at an additional cost of 25% of your original policy price. For instance, if you have a single person Multi trip at £84.24 you would pay an additional £21.06. If your trip is longer than 45 days this extra time would need to be insured with a additional single trip policy up to the number of extra days (on top of the single trip extension premium).

Q7 - My baggage will be covered under my household insurance – is there an option to omit this from my policy and, if so, do I receive a discount?

A - You can opt to exclude baggage from your policy and will subsequently be entitled to a 20% discount. However please ensure you have also accounted for any dive kit you may be carrying. Under the travel policy up to £750 worth of dive kit cover is included (With a single item limit of £300) but only if you opt for baggage cover. If you have a lot of kit to cover you may consider our new for old dive kit insurance which starts from a little as £42 a year.

Q8 - Is the baggage/kit cover on the scubasure travel policy ‘new for old’?

A - No. Replacement will be to the value of the item when bought (subject to terms and conditions of your insurance).

Q9 - I have a Scubasure Multi Trip policy and I am going skiing in January for 2 weeks then again in March for 1 week so would like to add SkiCare to my existing policy. Is there a trip duration limit or would I be covered for this number of days if I add SkiCare?

A - Under the annual policy SkiCare covers you for a one off trip of up to 17 days. On this basis, for the second trip to be covered, a single trip policy would be required.

Q10 - Does the optional SkiCare cover me for off piste and, if so, does this affect the policy price?

A - You are covered for off piste as long as you are with a qualified guide or instructor.

Q11 – Under the travel policy is any of my dive kit covered in the baggage section? Could you also tell me what level of baggage cover I have?

The baggage cover limit is £1500 which comprises of £750 personal luggage cover and £750 dive kit cover with a £200 single item limit. Please note this is not a new for old policy. Please also note that it is not possible to alter the 50/50 split (for example you cannot request £1000 of dive kit cover and £500 of personal luggage cover).

Q12 - I have a health problem that I feel may affect my insurance, what should I do?

A - The policy wording contains a health declaration that must be agreed when taking out the insurance. In the case of annual multi trip cover it must also be agreed each time a trip is booked. If you are able to agree to the statements contained in the health declaration then full cover can be given without need for further disclosure. If you are unable to agree to any points, or are unsure, you should call us and declare the condition(s). Where possible we will liaise with the underwriter to establish whether any exclusions need to be made (i.e. whether cover can be offered for the condition or any associated problems). In some instances you may be required to call the underwriters medical screening line. If in doubt always declare as failure to do so could result in problems arising in the event of a claim.

Q13 - I have an annual multitrip and was in good health when it was purchased (i.e. I was able to comply with the health declaration). However I am having an operation a few months before I am due to take my next trip. The GP has confirmed I will be fit to travel so do I need to declare this?

A - If you have a change in health after purchasing a policy but before you travel or book a further trip and you are then unable to agree to the health declaration you must declare this. The underwriters will confirm if cover is affected. If the health change is significant and they cannot continue full cover they would, if necessary, cover the cost of cancellation for trips booked. If you book a trip after discovering a change in health and/or pending operation the underwriters will need further details, irrespective of your GP declaring you fit to travel, in order to ascertain whether there would be exclusions to your policy as, depending on reason for op, you may have symptoms and/or health problems post op even if fully healed from the op and fit to travel. Generally the underwriters will not cover anything related to the op if surgery is within 3 months of travel date. Each case must be considered on its own merits so, if you have a pending trip, any change in health should be declared so the un derwriters can advise accordingly.

Q14 - I am currently on medication for stress, do I need to declare this?

A - Yes, if you cannot comply with the health declaration.

Q15 - I have declared a health problem which I have been told will need to be excluded from my policy. What does this mean?

A - This simply means that if any claim arises as a result of the specified health problem (such as medical expenses, cancellation or curtailment) you would not be covered. This is due to the fact that you are knowingly travelling with a health problem and, as such, are accepting any associated risks. Please be assured that you are still covered for any unrelated medical issues.

Q16 - My GP has declared me unfit to travel but I feel fine and would like to take my planned trip regardless. Can I get insurance cover?

A - The simple answer is no. If a GP has declared you unfit to travel he/she feels your health would be at risk so, from an insurance point of view, this is classed as an unacceptable risk.

Q17 - I haven taken out an annual policy to start in 3 months time. I want to book a trip now which will commence after the policy start date. Am I covered for cancellation in the mean time – between now and when the policy starts?

A - No, you are not. You are only covered from the date your annual policy starts. However if you have booked a trip in advance and buy a single trip policy at the same time you will have cancellation cover from the date you pay for the policy irrespective of the fact that it does not start until your trip commencement date.

Q18 - does my policy cover me for delays caused by terrorist activity?

A - No it does not, however you may consider adding the ‘bolt on’ insurance offered by www.securitydelayinsurance.com. This covers you for things such as overnight accommodation in the event of a long delay and the cost of rearranging travel at short notice. Follow the link on our site to add this on to your insurance. Prices start from £5. Please note that this insurance must be added for each trip you take (there is no annual cover option).

Q19 - I took out a policy with a different company last year. I unfortunately had cause to make a claim and found the service most unsatisfactory. I did not get my claim settled properly even though I feel it was straight forward. This has made me nervous, how can I be sure that I will be treated fairly if I decided to make a claim?

A - Our underwriters, Fortis, have an excellent claims record and will always endeavour to provide the best possible service. We receive many compliments from clients that have made claims in the past and have been very satisfied. In particular the fact that they are able to liaise with sport diving specialists, who ensure that they receive the best attention in respect of their claim, is very reassuring.
